1-Page Query Letter Basics
1. Create a compelling opening paragraph that
- Captures your idea in a few words and makes the reader want to know more.
- Indicates you are seeking an agent (or publisher).
- Tells how you found this agent (or editor), especially if you have been referred.
2. Introduce yourself and your qualifications. Be specific about your expertise and writing track record.
3. Give pertinent information about your nonfiction book:
- State your hook succinctly.
- Tell how it makes a fresh contribution to the market.
4. Conclude with a strong closing paragraph: Offer to send your proposal, manuscript, clippings of articles about you or written by you, copy of a previous book, or whatever else is relevant and impressive.
5. Include a stamped self-addressed envelope (SASE). If you don't, you may not receive a reply.
